Cipro tablets

Cipro Description

brand name: Cipro;
drug class: fluoroquinolone antiinfective;
action: a broad-spectrum bactericidal agent that inhibits enzyme deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) gyrase needed for replication of DNA;
uses: adult urinary tract infection, uncomplicated gonorrhea, typhoid fever; effective against some periodontal organisms.

Cipro is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. It fights bacteria in the body. It works by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.

Cipro is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent or slow anthrax after exposure.

Cipro Dosages

CIPRO film-coated tablets are available in 250 mg, 500 mg and 750 mg (ciprofloxacin equivalent) strengths. Ciprofloxacin tablets are white to slightly yellowish.

In the recently published UK national guidelines on sexually transmitted infections and closely related conditions  ciprofloxacin 500 mg orally as a single dose has been recommended for uncomplicated anogenital infection due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae in adults. However, some studies have shown that an oral dose of 250 mg of ciprofloxacin is an effective treatment for uncomplicated gonorrhoea.

A single oral dose of 100 mg ciprofloxacin has been reported to be effective in eradicating uncomplicated urethral gonorrhoea in men.  In our study a single oral dose of 250 mg of ciprofloxacin was found to be effective for treating uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. However, consideration may be given to a higher dose of ciprofloxacin or other alternatives when the infection may have been acquired in locations where resistant strains are endemic.
