Zithromax Description

Zithromax is an macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin.It fights bacteria in the body.

Zithromax is used for

Zithromax is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
In children, it is used to treat middle ear infection, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and strep throat.

Side Effects of Zithromax

Zithromax has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with thousands of people worldwide having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects are always documented and compared to those that occur in a similar group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.

Based on these studies, the most common Zithromax side effects include:

•    Nausea -- in up to 5 percent of people
•    Loose stools or diarrhea -- up to 7 percent
•    Vomiting -- up to 7 percent
•    Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 3 percent
•    Headache -- up to 1 percent
•    Unexplained rash -- up to 2 percent.

The likelihood of these side effects varied, based on the Zithromax dosage and how it was taken.
Some side effects with Zithromax may indicate something serious. If you experience any of these side effects, stop taking the drug and contact your healthcare provider. These side effects include but are not limited to:

•    Blood in stools
•    Severe or watery diarrhea
•    Yellowing of the skin or eyes
•    Difficulty breathing or swallowing
•    Wheezing
•    Irregular heartbeat
•    Abnormal swelling
•    Hives
•    Unexplained rash
•    Itching
•    Peeling of skin.

zithromax dosage

Adults

ZITHROMAX tablets can be taken with or without food. 500 mg as a single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2 through 5.

Pediatric Patients

The recommended dose of ZITHROMAX for oral suspension for the treatment of pediatric patients with acute otitis media is 30 mg/kg given as a single dose or 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or 10 mg/kg as a single dose on the first day followed by 5 mg/kg/day on Days 2 through 5.

HOW zithromax  SUPPLIED

ZITHROMAX 250 mg tablets are supplied as pink modified capsular shaped, engraved, film-coated tablets containing azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 250 mg of azithromycin. ZITHROMAX 250 mg tablets are engraved with “PFIZER” on one side and “306” on the other.
ZITHROMAX 500 mg tablets are supplied as pink modified capsular shaped, engraved, film-coated tablets containing azithromycin dihydrate equivalent to 500 mg of azithromycin. ZITHROMAX 500 mg tablets are engraved with “Pfizer” on one side and “ZTM500” on the other.
ZITHROMAX for oral suspension after constitution contains a flavored suspension. ZITHROMAX® for oral suspension is supplied to provide 100 mg/5 mL or 200 mg/5 mL suspension in bottles
